Beaten stiff (and other news)
Tonight, Josh is enjoying his bi-monthly, man-thing that he has with some guys from church. It's called "The Fellowship of the Leaf" and involves a bunch of men sitting around a houka talking about manly things (whatever those may be). So, in his absence I decided to try my hand at from-scratch brownies. I found a really simple recipe that called for 4 eggs whites beaten stiff. This got me to thinkin'...
Who ever came up with that idea?? I mean, especially before the invention of electric mixers? What inspired someone to say, "Gee, I wonder what would happen if I beat these egg whites until my arm fell off?" and then when they stiffened, (the eggs, not the person) said, "I think these would be a great addition to baked goods!" It just seems so bizarre. But, really, so many things seem bizarre to me.
In other news, next semester I will be ta-ing for the great JDH. If you don't know who that is, and if you care, email me. I have a policy against posting professors names, should they ever show up in a google search. Well, I'm looking forward to the experience, but am also leery. One reason is, it will be a lot of work, and it will be my best chance to impress JDH into giving me money should I decide to stay here and pursue a PhD. Another reason is, it lands me (once again) in the heat of controversy. There were some daggers flying over the competition to TA for him...and I think some hurt feelings about who was chosen and who was not. But, it's as simple as this ladies and gentlemen...I found out he was teaching and sent him an email asap telling him I would really like to be his TA - to which he replied that he would like that very much as well and would see to it being arranged. Yes, I took advantage of the fact that he's expressed interest to Josh about having me work with his Institute. But, really, what is graduate school about if it's not taking advantage of connections and networking shamelessly??? That how you get jobs once you're done! You might as well get used to the game now.
Those are my thoughts for the evening as I anxiously await my never-before-made-from-scratch brownies. Sorry if the thoughts are un-stimulating and boring. I've been up most nights this week coughing to death...hence am low on sleep and on intelligent thought.
