Random Friday Musings

1) I went to buy sudafed the other day and had to show my ID, and they wrote down my name and the amount I bought. I felt like a criminal. I assured the pharmacist that I was not going to be making crystal meth. He was overly friendly and kept asking "Is there anything else I can do for you?" He asked about three times. I almost said, "Yeah, you can get me some crystal meth" but I didn't think it would be a funny joke and I thought maybe some cops would run in from the back room and arrest me.

2) I've decided I don't like air conditioning. Don't get me wrong, I don't like it being 85 and humid in my apartment, but I also don't like feeling like I live in a meat locker. There has to be some way to cool the air without making it frigid. I've been really wishing for October lately. I want to sleep with the window open, and wake up to the unique kind of fresh air that seeps into your apartment overnight while you sleep.

3) I'm making progress on my paper. I think the most interesting finding I have so far is that fathers are seldom shown giving affection to their children in books. (I've coded affection as any hugging, kissing, touching, holding, etc.) Oh - and in case you're wondering, out of the 65 books I've read, there are dads in 26 of them (that's 40%). Something else I've learned is that many of the Caldecott award winning books are sort of strange and I can't figure out why certain books win and others don't.

I was waiting for that dad statistic. Why do you think that is?

Oh, you are all against air conditioning now...but when you sleep in a 5000 degree, 250% humidity bat cave like we do you really begin to pine for it.

I don't hate air condition, or heat, just the sudden transition between the two, and the sudden condensation on my glasses.
