Simple Joys of Real Life (aka, taking a few weeks off from being a student)
Forgive me for not posting. I've been too busy rediscovering the joy of reading for pleasure! Yes, it's true, I've been reading novels...and it's been wonderful. Right now, I'm so caught up in "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez that I really don't want to do anything but read it. Pretty soon, this will have to end, because I have to start reading Charles Taylor's "Sources of the Self" for a class in the fall, and I have to read children's books for my paper, and I have to make a reading list for my directed reading. But, for now, I'm reveling in the pleasures of literature and remembering how much I love to read good books. Here is an excerpt from Marquez that displays why I'm finding this book so delightful:
"Dr. Urbino was reluctant to confess his hatred of animals, which he disguised with all kinds of scientific inventions and philosophical pretexts that convinced many, but not his wife. He said that people who loved them to excess were capable of the worst cruelties toward human beings. He said that dogs were not loyal but servile, that cats were opportunists and traitors, that peacocks were heralds of death, that macaws were simply decorative annoyances, that rabbits fomented greed, that monkeys carried the fever of lust, and that roosters were damned because they had been complicit in the three denials of Christ."
In other news, today is my Pap's birthday. Had emphysema not robbed him of his genetic ability to live a long life, he would be turning 77 today. In his honor, I am making Krusteaz Lemon Bars., which were one of his favorite desserts. Also appropriate would be Aldi brand ho-ho's, anything made by Little Debbie, and sometimes, jelly from a spoon. :o) Happy Birthday, Pap. We all miss you.

I like animals excessively. Especially good looking cats like Moses. Have you ever noticed me being "...of the worst cruelties toward human beings."?
Also, don't forget the over-abundance of coffee in a burger king cup, or the corel-wear coffee cup with a burger king lid.
I love those lemon bars too!
i should have included a disclaimer that said "Dr. Urbino's opinions about animals do not represent those of the editor of Sociological Imagination."
I, also, love animals to excess, especially Moses, and lately any cute dog I see on the downtown mall and make a complete annoyance out of my myself by insisting on "meeting" the dog, finding out the breed and anything the owner is willing to tell me about him/her. The other day I met a lab/airdale mix that the owner described as a "love child." It was one of the cutest, most unique looking dogs I have ever seen.
Anyway...I just think the phrase about roosters is one of the best things I've ever read in a novel!
I just started re-reading Love in the Time of Cholera a few weeks ago. You're gonna love it.
