Master Mair

Today is graduation. True to my form, I'm ready half an hour before I'm to be picked up on my friend's red Vespa. Joshua and my parents are already sitting out under the morning sun waiting for commencement to commence. This whole thing is weird to me, coming from a small school where we actually practiced graduation and actually got our degrees handed to us in one big ceremony. Here, however, there's a big shabang on the Lawn, where the Governor is giving the commencement address...and then we all disperse to our respective department graduations where we actually graduate. Having no idea what to expect, I had some crazy dreams last night, including the one where I forgot my "line" that I was supposed to say after my advisor hoods me.

I've been less excited than I ought to be over this event. I think it's because I see it as "bridging," not graduating. Next week, I start working on two projects and next year I take some of the hardest classes of my life. I think I'll feel like it's abig deal when I'm getting a doctoral hood. But, the fact remains, I'm getting a master's degree today, and that's pretty cool.

I've only managed to waste five minutes typing this. Now I have to go wait for 25 more. Maybe we'll wear our regalia on the Vespa...that would be hokey. :o)

Way to go, Mair!! I'm so happy for you - for what you've accomplished and what's coming next. Enjoy the summer and the researching for "fun." And take a trip to Colorado while you're at it!

well, it's like I've always said: better to be bridged than breached, or even beached, like a whale.

You're skinny.

Thanks for all the congrats, everyone. You should see my degree - it's HUGE - like 16X22 or something. What am I supposed to do with this thing?!?!

You could make a table out of it.

No, don't do that.

Congratulations! I can't believe it's been two years already!

Mair - congratulations! Way to rock academia with sweet sociologist stuff and things! Hope the hood works out and don't forget to wear it to church, the gym, and that awesome Indian restaurant we went to. Way to go!

Congrats! I realized that I read your post and forgot to comment. Now I will be the tool who comments afterwards. You could take your degree and put it on a string and carry it around your neck like some large gaudy Free Mason cult jewelry.
