No Time Left for You
Well, my life is quickly approaching boiling point. It's going to be a busy couple of weeks. This week, I'm still trying to finish that fellowship application, I have a paper proposal due on Friday, which means that I have to find sources, I have to finish grading the stack of awful stats tests that are at my feet as I type, in addition to all my usual tasks like going to class. And just to make it all more interesting - I woke up this morning feeling very yucky. So, hopefully it is a one-day sore throat and that's all.
Anyway, I'm reading this great book right now by Dalton Conley called "Being Black, Living in the Red." It's all about the huge gap between Blacks and whites when it comes to wealth. It is very interesting, and when I finish it (which I have to do today, by the way) I will let you know what the results are. But, for now, here are some statistics to whet your appetite:
* "In 1993, 32.8% of white students used a computer at home, compared to only 10.9% of African American students, a full two-third fewer."
* "Only 9% of black men made more than $50.000 in 1997 - in contrast to 24% of white men."
Without giving away the premise of the book...I will say that America is ripe with inequality and it shows up most vividly in comparisons of wealth (assests). It is very troubling to me and I don't know what to do about it.
With that said, I have to go call the woman from the Monticello Area Community Action Agency about this fellowship business.
p.s. The title of this post results from the fact that this very annoying song has been stuck in my head for a couple of days. Maybe it is a my subconscious speaking to the time crunch I face these days.
